The first CD I ever owned as a young drummer had Jeff's beautiful playing on it...the CD was entitled "Anonymous Confessions of a Lunatic Friend" by an artist named Bryan Duncan..the songs range cover pop/rock/blues/funk and gospel...
I probably listened to that CD thousands of times in awe of Jeff's mastery. Being a young kid at the time, I thought pretty much everybody played like Jeff. Boy, was I wrong! There will only ever be 1 Jeff Porcaro. My dad, who is not a musician, would come into my room when I was shedding to that CD and say "THAT'S how you want to play, son!" I really miss his playing.
The thing that struck me most about Jeff was how musically he grooved. Everything was just SO tasty and deep. Man, he was soooo bad!
We miss you, Jeff! Thanks for everything!

Oh MAN, don't bum me out, you guys :c(
What a travesty it is that we lost he, Bonham, & Carlos in such a manner as we did.
At least we have their recorded legacy - a small consolation. Many were truly saddened & hurt by these tragic losses.
On a positve note...Hopefully, "One day, fellas"... :c)
[Don't mean to be 'schlocky,' but] -
To our 'fallen brothers,' who left us 'before their Time.'
Peace.

Jeff's been one of my favorites since I started studying drums seriously. Even with the recent competition building with "extreme drumming" (Virgil, Mangini, Lang, etc.), I still can get my drum "fix" by just listening to Jeff groove over a few tunes.
In honor of Jeff's 50-th, I was going to throw "Toto IV," "Katy Lied," "Silk Degrees," and possibly "If That's What It Takes" in the CD player and play along to a few tunes, but I got home too late. I'll get to it this weekend for sure....I hope you can all do the same!
PS - There's a tune on "If That's What It Takes" called "That's Why" that Jeff plays on. It's one of my favorites to play along to, and I believe Erskoman once mentioned this particular tune as a favorite in an interview for the deep pocket and perfectly placed backbeats.

I have yet to hear time played like Porcaro. Doesn't matter what genre, no one came close to the solidity of his groove.
As I get older, the more I appreciate that quality, as well as the fact that drugs are bad for you.
